Todays Program
by Amelia Roll

Our guest speaker today was Bruce Carr, who is a member of the Farmington Rotary Club, he is also a volunteer with World Medical Relief in Detroit.  World Medical Relief was founded in 1953 by Irene Auberlin, a Detroit homemaker who filled her garage and basement with infant diapers, formula and supplies in response to an appeal to help orphans in wartorn Korea.  It didn't take long for other nations to appeal to her for help and before too long the mission of the organization was expanded.

Currently World Medical Relief offers the following assistance:

- provides medical supplies and equipment to hospitals and clinics in developing countries, typically 100 shipments annually

- assists in the process of providing both brand name and generic medications at an affordable price to individuals without prescription drug coverage

- provides items such as a hospital bed, wheelchair, walker, commode to individuals without insurance

- donate personal hygiene products, blankets, linens and onther sundries to area shelters.

World Medical Relief is always in need of volunteers - individuals or groups to get the work done.  They also offer group tours of the facility on the last Monday of every month, except December, starting at 11 AM.  World Medical Relief also accepts donations of durable medical equipment.  Please visit www.worldmedicalrelief.org for more information.

In addition to volunteering at World Medical Relief, Mr. Carr created the Helping Overseas Directory, which is a listing of over 230 organizations and 73 sources of free and inexpensive medical supplies.  You can visit the online version at www.HelpingOverseasDirectory.org
